Gluvy vs the Face Yoga Method App: Teacher-Led or Self-Paced?

A guided iPhone app with gua sha, skincare and relaxation vs a teacher-led method. We make Gluvy, and we say so.

If you want one iPhone app that guides every move on screen, Gluvy is our top recommendation: follow-along video for every exercise with a countdown timer on every step, 3-week plans of 5–10 minutes a day, about 34 gua sha and facial-massage courses, skincare lessons and guided breathing, all for $49.99 a year. The Face Yoga Method app takes a different route, built around its founder, Fumiko Takatsu, and live classes. Both are free to download and sell access through in-app purchases. Full disclosure: Gluvy wrote this page, and Gluvy is one of the two apps.

We did not run hands-on tests of the Face Yoga Method app. Everything about it below comes from its public App Store listing, checked in October 2026. Everything about Gluvy comes from our own product information and pricing page. We don’t quote ratings for either app. Prices and features change, so check both listings before you pay.

The short verdict

Gluvy is the stronger all-in-one choice for self-paced practice on iPhone; the Face Yoga Method app centres on one teacher’s method and live classes.

Choose Gluvy if you:

  • Use an iPhone and want to practise whenever suits you, with no class schedule to keep.
  • Want to watch and copy each move, with a countdown on every step so you never guess how long to hold.
  • Want a big library: 229 guided face yoga video exercises across 8 face areas.
  • Want plenty of gua sha and facial massage, not just face exercises.
  • Like having skincare lessons and calm breathing, body scan or sleep sessions in the same app.
  • Want clear published prices and one simple App Store billing route.

Other options: the Face Yoga Method app may suit you if you specifically want to learn Fumiko Takatsu’s own method, prefer live classes at set times, or use Android (check Google Play; Gluvy is iPhone only).

Weighing more than these two? Our guide to the best face yoga apps compares six apps on the same criteria, and the Gluvy vs FaceYogi and Gluvy vs Luvly comparisons cover two other popular options.

Gluvy is built for practising on your own clock, with the routine, the timer and the extras all in one place.

Teaching approach

The biggest difference is how you’re guided: a library of timed follow-along videos, or one named teacher.

Gluvy is built around follow-along video workouts: 229 guided face yoga exercises across the forehead, eyes, nose, lips and mouth, cheeks, chin and jawline, neck and full face. Every step has a countdown timer, so you copy the move on screen and let the app tell you when to switch. There’s no instructor to book and no class time to hit, which makes it easy to fit a session into an irregular day, at 6 a.m. or 11 p.m.

The Face Yoga Method is the approach created by Japanese teacher Fumiko Takatsu, and the app is presented as guided by her. Its listing offers targeted programs, live classes and a membership.

Neither format makes the exercises themselves more effective. What matters is that you practise gently, with good form, and keep going. The 5-minute face yoga routine and the 12 face yoga exercises guide show what careful form looks like, and the beginner’s routine is an easy first session.

Programs and challenges

Gluvy runs short 3-week plans by face area; the Face Yoga Method app sells targeted programs and a membership.

Gluvy’s plans run for 3 weeks at about 5–10 minutes a day and are organised by face area, such as the chin and jawline program. The AI face analysis can suggest focus areas as a starting point (it isn’t a diagnosis), or you can pick a plan yourself. Morning and night routines, reminders and a progress journal with selfies help you keep the habit going. If you want a structured start without paying anything, our free 21-day face yoga challenge works on its own or alongside the app.

According to its listing, the Face Yoga Method app lets you choose from targeted programs, live classes or a membership option. The listing doesn’t spell out program lengths, so if you’re searching for something like a Face Yoga Method 28 day challenge, check inside the app or the listing for what’s currently offered rather than relying on older posts.

A note on expectations: research on face yoga is limited, whatever the method. The study most often cited is a small 2018 pilot in JAMA Dermatology (Alam et al., 2018). Of 27 women aged 40 to 65 who enrolled, 16 completed 30 minutes of exercises a day for 8 weeks, then every other day until week 20. Dermatologists rating standardised photos saw improved upper and lower cheek fullness, and estimated age dropped from about 50.8 to 48.1 years. There was no control group, so larger controlled studies are needed. Our article on whether face yoga works goes into more detail.

Beyond face exercises

Gluvy adds gua sha, skincare lessons and guided relaxation to your face routine; the Face Yoga Method app’s listing centres on face yoga teaching.

Gluvy has about 34 gua sha and facial-massage video courses. They range from jawline, cheek, brow and neck routines with a stone to morning depuffing massages, jaw relaxation and relaxing face yoga sessions, all timed. A short introductory course covers what gua sha is, how to choose a stone and the basic strokes. If you’re new to it, our gua sha routine guide walks through angle, pressure and order.

Gluvy’s skincare lessons are swipeable guides such as Skincare Rituals and the Glow Up Challenge, plus short article courses on retinol, serums, pores and gentle exfoliation. There are also guided sessions for breathing, a body scan, a sleep ritual and stress relief, designed as a few calm minutes beside your face routine.

We couldn’t confirm gua sha courses, skincare content or breathing sessions from the Face Yoga Method app’s listing. If those matter to you, look inside the app before you choose a membership.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Face Yoga Method legit?

The Face Yoga Method is an established, teacher-led approach created by Fumiko Takatsu, and its app is published on the App Store by Face Yoga Method LLC. Like every face yoga program, including Gluvy, it rests on limited scientific evidence: the best-known study is a small 2018 pilot with no control group. Treat any face yoga app as a gentle habit rather than a guaranteed result.

Does the Face Yoga Method have an app?

Yes. As of October 2026, the Face Yoga Method app is on the App Store, published by Face Yoga Method LLC. Its listing describes targeted programs, live classes and a membership option guided by Fumiko Takatsu, and it is free to download with in-app purchases.

Which is cheaper, Gluvy or the Face Yoga Method app?

Gluvy publishes its prices: as of October 2026, Gluvy Pro costs $49.99 a year or $7.99 a week on the US App Store, and new users may see a one-time $39.99 yearly offer. The Face Yoga Method app is free to download with in-app purchases for programs and membership, and we couldn't confirm its current prices, so compare the yearly total on its listing before you decide.

Can I combine the Face Yoga Method with Gluvy?

Yes, as long as you don't overdo the daily volume. For example, you could follow a short Gluvy plan or gua sha session most days and join a Face Yoga Method live class now and then. Keep the total time modest, keep the pressure light, and give your face a rest day if your jaw or skin feels sore.

Is Gluvy available on Android?

No. Gluvy is an iPhone app only, with no Android or web version. If you use Android, check Google Play to see whether the Face Yoga Method app or another face yoga app is available for your phone.
